Frequently Asked Questions - Zygoma
What is the difference between a standard implant and a Zygoma implant? … And how are they similar?
The average length of an implant is 8–16 mm. Zygoma implants are 35–55 mm long. Incidentally, their material and system compatibility are identical to those of the implants included in our Premium Silver and Gold packages. The same types of dental restorations can be fabricated for Zygoma implants as well.
Is Zygoma better than traditional dental implants?
We only use Zygoma if:
- The patient has complete edentulism in the upper jaw
- Traditional implantation is not possible because there is not (enough) bone
- and for some reason, we cannot or do not want to perform bone grafting.
It would be unwarranted to use a Zygoma implant instead of a traditional implant: it is unnecessarily more complicated and more expensive.
If Zygoma can only be applied on top, what about underneath?
In addition to Zygoma, we are equipped with the expertise, specialized implants, and equipment needed for several other specific techniques developed specifically for complete edentulism.
These techniques: Trefoil, interforaminal, trans-sinus, All-on-4,
All-on-6, pterygoid, paranasal.
Some of these can also be used on the underside, and there are some that can be used exclusively on the underside.
Why is Zygoma better and more advantageous than bone grafting?
✅ No bone grafting required
- Bone grafting always carries a higher risk
- Although the Zygoma implant is more expensive than an average implant, it is not nearly as expensive as bone grafting
- Bone grafting significantly extends the treatment process by 3 to 12 months
- Bone grafting is an additional procedure—not the most pleasant one

Why don't they make Zygoma elsewhere?

3️⃣ Extensive professional experience is required – we performed the first Zygoma implant in 2014
4️⃣ The CT scanner must be located near the operating room
Does the zygomatic bone, into which the zygoma is inserted, always remain?
Yes. It's very rare for it to shrink to such a small size that at least one Zygoma cannot be inserted.
How dangerous is it? How much more risky is it?
Just like other implants, Zygoma implants also have their risks; they’re just different. It is not ”significantly” more dangerous than, for example, the placement of lower implants. The complication rate associated with the loss of a zygoma implant is similar to that of standard implants.
